Discover the Oia Steps: A Unique Journey to Ammoudi Bay
The Allure of Oia Steps
Welcome to the enchanting Oia Steps, the picturesque pathway winding down from the village of Oia to the stunning Ammoudi Bay. With breathtaking views at every turn, this descent offers a perfect blend of physical activity and natural beauty, making it an unforgettable experience for tourists visiting Santorini.
Why Visit Ammoudi Bay?
Ammoudi Bay is renowned for its vibrant colors and serene atmosphere. Visitors can soak in the views of the deep blue Aegean Sea and rugged cliffs, making it a prime spot for photography and relaxation. This hidden gem is perfect for those who wish to escape the bustling tourist spots and enjoy a quieter side of Santorini.
Prepare for a Memorable Walk
Walking down the Oia Steps is not just a journey to the bay; it is an experience enriched with stunning landscapes. As Mary Zilinskiy notes, "Beautiful views while walking down to Ammoudi Bay. The views are completely worth it!" Ensuring you wear comfortable shoes will enhance your experience as you wander this picturesque trail.
Embrace the Challenge of the Descent
The Oia Steps feature approximately 250 steps, offering both a challenge and a thrill. Daniel Bao encourages those finding it challenging to consider riding a donkey up the steps. "The view is totally worth the effort," he says, reminding us that the effort put into the hike is truly rewarding.
Wide Steps, Unforgettable Views
According to visitor David Catriel, the steps are nice and wide, making the descent more enjoyable. However, he notes they can be a bit steep, so it’s essential to take it slow and appreciate the gorgeous views of the sea and surrounding neighborhood along the way.
The Importance of Safe Footwear
Jackie shares her experience of navigating the steps. Even with trainers, she found sections to be slippery, especially under the hot sun. It’s advisable to prepare for the heat and choose safe footwear to ensure a comfortable journey down to the bay.
Navigating the Elements
The hike down is not just a physical journey; it’s an encounter with Santorini’s natural elements. Jackie describes the warm temperatures and the absence of shade, making the ascent more daunting. For those who might tire from the walk, a taxi can provide a convenient return to Oia.
Animal Concerns Along the Steps
While the Oia Steps offer the charm of local donkey rides, some visitors express concerns. Jackie noted her unease walking past the donkeys and the presence of donkey waste on the stairs, reminding travelers to be aware of their surroundings and treat these animals with kindness.
A Warning About Slips and Trips
Safety is paramount on the Oia Steps. As Jackie observed, she witnessed an older woman unexpectedly slip and fall. Caution is advised; walking slowly and being mindful of footing can help prevent accidents along the steep pathway.
The Joy of Shared Experiences
Visitors like Liya highlight the collective experience shared amongst those navigating the steps. "There are many steps, so be prepared," she notes, but reassures that the breathtaking views make every effort worthwhile, creating shared memories with fellow travelers.
Photography Opportunities Abound
The stunning vistas along the Oia Steps provide endless opportunities for photography enthusiasts. Whether capturing the sun setting over the Aegean Sea or the unique architecture of the buildings, every angle reveals a new perspective worth documenting.

Beautiful views while walking down to Ammoudi Bay. Would highly recommend wearing comfortable shoes. The views are completely worth it!
250 steep steps. Ride donkey if it’s too challenging to climb up. The view is totally worth the effort
A beautiful walk down to the port, with gorgeous views of the sea and surrounding neighborhood. The steps are nice and wide, but a bit on the steel side.
We walked down the stairs & we both had trainers. My boyfriend was unbothered but I thought it was quite slippy at times, not to mention we done it in very hot heat. It’s a cool view but we opted for a taxi back up, the thought of walking up those stairs with zero shade in 30 degree heat wasn’t doing it for us. I felt quite uneasy walking past the donkeys at the bottom as their back legs were really close, I was nervous that one could kick. I’m also convinced there was horses as well as donkeys, we wouldn’t have rode them anyway, felt quite cruel keeping them there in that heat. Not to mention there’s donkey poo allover the stairs which you have to dodge and try not to slip. We actually seen an older women slip and fall.
There are many steps, so be prepared, especially for the climb. However, the breathtaking view makes it completely worth the effort.
