Tranquility in the Mountains: Embracing Village Life
A Cozy Introduction to March
As March unfolds in a quaint, remote Greek village, life takes on a gentle pace. Join me for a serene day spent in my rustic stone cottage, sipping hot tea and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. However, a pressing issue arises: the roof of our woodshed is leaking, soaking the firewood meant to keep us warm. As weathered as our old home may be, these challenges remind us that some renovations are essential, yet fleeting resources often thwart our plans.
The Challenge of the Woodshed
Traditionally, our woodshed has shielded our logs from rain, but with age comes wear. Today, the pursuit of a cozy fire seems daunting as the rain lashes against the windows. In bygone days, we rarely worried about firewood getting damp, but the weather has made today’s task far trickier. Venturing out in the storm is not ideal, but bigger logs are crucial for warmth, so I’ll gather what I can.
Quietude in Rainy Days
On rainy mornings, the world outside transforms into a tranquil retreat, urging us to pause and relax. There’s a unique solace in waking early, wrapped in a blanket with a warm cup of tea, unhurried by the demands of daily life. Rainy days in the village prompt us to slow down; we observe nature’s intricate dance—even in the wettest conditions. Birds seek refuge, flowers cherish the rainfall, and fruit trees gracefully lose their delicate blossoms.
Garden Dreams Altered by Rain
Despite my affection for rainy weather, I wish for sunshine this weekend. The ground is far too soggy for planting potatoes; excess moisture could lead to rot and hinder their growth. There are also neglected chores around the house, including painting the metal door, a critical reminder of the ongoing upkeep our rustic abode requires.
March: The Trickster Month
March, or "Μάρτης, γδάρτης και παλουκοκαύτης," signifies the unpredictability of spring’s arrival here in Greece. With its mischievous nature, this month often tests our resolve. In ancient traditions, locals wore red and white bracelets to ward off ill-fortune and unpredictable weather—a practice rooted in both superstition and protection against malevolent spirits.
Embracing Tradition for Protection
The folklore surrounding March bracelets has persisted over generations in Greece and Cyprus. Believed to provide shelter from the erratic weather and protect against misfortune, these bracelets symbolize the rhythm of life during this transitional season. Perhaps using it as a hair tie is a whimsical exaggeration, but it evokes fond memories and local charm.
A Glimpse Beyond the Cottage
As time passes, the rain finally stops, revealing a quiet stillness in the village. This rare calm encourages me to venture outside for a stroll. With the remnants of rain still scattered about, the air feels fresh—a much-needed change. My goal is to search for wild asparagus, although rumors of wild boars nearby weigh heavily on my mind.
A Journey of Foraging and Community
After scanning the local landscape, I find little luck in foraging asparagus—Maria might be right about the lack of abundance here. However, my prior experiences in the hills of Voula with my grandparents bring back warm memories. Harvesting wild asparagus alongside loved ones is a cherished tradition, and these peaceful days remind me of the importance of community.
Anticipating Family Visits
My grandparents’ upcoming visit adds a spark of excitement to the slow-paced days. Reflecting on the past, I recall the joy of crafting flower crowns with my grandmother, a treasured activity celebrated each spring. The nostalgia of those family moments fills me with joy as I anticipate our time together once more.
Sunshine and Hope
With the onset of a brighter day, my spirit lifts as I venture down the mountainside in search of asparagus. The delightful smell of blooming chamomile fills the air. The wild asparagus peeks through the earth, inviting my enthusiasm while nature blossoms in celebration of spring.
Finding Hidden Gems in the Wild
After some searching, we finally strike gold! Locally known edible plants spring from the earth, and the thrill of discovery fills the day. Although finding asparagus has proven challenging, the abundance of nature’s bounty along the journey keeps my spirits high. With gently budding plants all around, the magic of spring is palpable.
Reflecting on the Day’s Endeavors
Upon returning home, I marvel at the handful of asparagus collected, grateful for what nature has offered. Each wild sprout thrives in its habitat, reminding me of the joys of foraging and the satisfaction of hard-earned rewards. Renewed by the day’s venture, I plan to return tomorrow to see if luck continues to follow.
Preservation of Heritage Amidst Change
With time, managing the house has transitioned from my grandparents to my brother and me. Understandably, there are numerous repair tasks awaiting attention. Establishing a plan to restore what we can—starting with the gate door—becomes crucial as we embrace the journey of maintaining our rustic haven.
Evening Reflections Under Distant Stars
As the sun sinks below the horizon, I find peace watching the twilight unfold, accompanied by the soft calls of distant wildlife. Evening activities await me, balancing cooking, chores, and chores against the promise of another day in this tranquil village. Despite the day’s challenges, the serenity of this lifestyle brings an immense sense of fulfillment.
Looking Forward to the Next Day
Exhausted yet invigorated, I recognize the value of simplicity that village life provides. Amidst the constant ebb and flow of responsibilities, I eagerly anticipate tomorrow’s adventures. Tomorrow brings another opportunity to embrace the serenity of the mountains and discover what nature has in store.
In this quiet village life, we draw strength from the slow unfolding of each day, weaving together traditions and new experiences rooted in the vibrant beauty of our surroundings. I invite you to join me in this peaceful journey.

These are wonderful videos. Your little mountain village is gorgeous. And if you don't want to degrade the way of life on your village, try not to give the location until things are organized for tourists. If indeed you want them. Keeping your village pristine and authentic is a challenge in today's reality. I think your videos do show that about Greek mountain village life. It's so important for all our villages to find that golden balance in keeping Greece and her culture alive, especially when they are under so many threats these days. Bravo to you for undertaking this challenge.
