Discovering Mykonos: A Romantic Escape on the Legendary Greek Island

Mykonos—a name synonymous with beach parties, vibrant nightlife, and stunning landscapes. While many picture the island as a nonstop rave, we invite you to explore a more serene side, perfect for couples or perhaps even a charming getaway for Grandma. In this travel blog, we recount our immersive four-day experience on Mykonos, showcasing its breathtaking beaches, rich history, and culinary delights.

The Joy of Reuniting with Travel

After a long hiatus due to the pandemic, our first international holiday set the stage for an exhilarating adventure. As we stepped onto Mykonian soil, it felt almost surreal, heightened by what seemed to be a fireworks display in our honor. The arrival fireworks were an unexpected touch, leaving us in awe of our new surroundings.

Mykonos Town: A Labyrinth of Wonders

As the sun rose on our first full day, we ventured into Mykonos Town, or "Chora" as the locals call it. This bustling hub is renowned for its charming cobbled streets, eclectic boutiques, and mouthwatering cuisine. Wandering through the intricate pathways was not just enjoyable; it was the perfect way to appreciate the island’s quaint architecture and unique shops.

Windmills and Little Venice: A Picture-Perfect Perspective

No trip to Mykonos is complete without stopping by the iconic windmills that dot the landscape, remnants of a past era dating back to the 16th century. Just a stone’s throw away lies "Little Venice," an enchanting area that features picturesque seaside views and trendy spots for food and drink. We found that late morning was the best time to savor a leisurely coffee with a view.

Culinary Delights at Captain’s Restaurant

Our adventure led us to Captains Restaurant at the Old Port, renowned for its delectable sharing plates. We savored flavorful meatballs alongside a tangy yogurt dip, succulent octopus bites, and a Greek salad that even a vegetable skeptic like me couldn’t resist. With fantastic food and captivating surroundings, it was a feast to remember.

Evening Magic at the 180 Sunset Bar

As dusk approached, we headed to the 180 Sunset Bar, a highly recommended spot that lived up to its reputation. Pre-booking a table is essential for the best experience, especially given its stunning sunset views. For €60 per person, we enjoyed an enchanting evening with live music, breathtaking views, and a delightful meal, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Relaxing at Our Coastal Oasis

Nestled on the southwestern coast of Mykonos, our hotel was a serene haven that overlooked the sea. Ideal for unwinding or soaking up the sun, it was a beautiful blend of tranquility and proximity to the island’s entertainment. The hotel’s welcoming atmosphere, paired with some of the best bread we’d ever tasted, only enhanced our stay.

Family-Friendly Fun at Ornos Beach

Just a short distance away, Ornos emerged as a popular family beach, brimming with modern dining options. We found ourselves at Kouzina, where we enjoyed a delectable sushi platter, showcasing the island’s diverse culinary options. The combination of sun, sea, and fresh food was nothing short of bliss.

Sunset Dining at Pili Beach Restaurant

For our evening meal, we ventured to Agios Ioannis, famed for its breathtaking sunsets and film history, particularly as the backdrop for "Shirley Valentine." We indulged in traditional dishes with a modern twist at Pili Beach Restaurant, making it a recommendable experience one shouldn’t miss while on Mykonos.

A Journey to Delos Island: Where Myths Come Alive

Our third day took us off Mykonos for a fascinating day trip to Delos Island—an important archaeological site steeped in mythology. Known as the birthplace of Apollo, the area is a treasure trove of history, featuring ancient ruins, temples, and remnants of past civilizations that made our guided tour both enlightening and unforgettable.

Sipping Souvlaki and Embracing Local Flavor

Returning to Mykonos Town after our Delos adventure, we treated ourselves to traditional Greek fast food—souvlaki wrapped in pita bread. This delightful meal was a delicious end to a cultural day, showcasing the simple yet exquisite flavors that Greek cuisine is known for.

An Envious Evening at a Nearby Hotel

Curiosity led us to explore a neighboring hotel, where elegant infinity pools and opulent surroundings sparked a tinge of envy. As we strolled through the grounds, we reflected on our travel choice and excitedly anticipated our mini hike scheduled for the following day.

Navigating Modern-Day Travel: The Covid Test Experience

No contemporary holiday would be complete without addressing the necessary Covid tests. We humorously faced this modern requirement, making it part of our travel story as we prepared for the next leg of our journey.

Island Hopping with the Mykonos Water Taxi

For our final day, we took advantage of the Mykonos Water Taxi, which connects seven stunning beaches along the southern coast. For just €20, we relished unlimited boat rides packed with relaxation, good food, and sunbathing. The easy access to various locations made for a delightful final day of our Mykonos escape.

  1. I never get tired of watching your videos for the relevant content and the very inspiring way that you have created and presented them. Your use of humor is a plus factor. Looking forward to more of your travel videos! 🥰

  2. For the 1-hour coastal from Platis Gialos to Paradise Beach, is it mostly a narrow undulating dirt path? Any rocky or stone parts along the way? The website has a good map, but not much info about the terrain online. Thanks!

  3. Fantastic video monkey, I was there in the 70s and had a wonderful time, I slept on that hill where that posh bar is now but the sunset is just the same. Praise the Sun.

  4. Wonderful video. Regarding 9:00 about your sushi and pasta. I'm not sure if you're sarcastic or not, but Greece has truly incredible pasta dishes. Pastitio beats Lasagna hands down, just to name a simple example. Greece's pasta tradition is as deep as that as from Italy. Just Greece is much more all-round with wonderful dishes in every other direction, meats, fish, pasta, pulses, potatoes, beans, rice, salads, desserts, etc, etc, etc. Every direction you find easily in immense diversity in every Greek restaurant. Instead of just 95% pasta or pizza like you find in many Italian places, which in my personal experiences have not been all that.

As the quality of making pasta both the Greeks or Italians can do that maximum quality. However. When you get to the real flavors of what makes pasta wonderful, Greece is using a much richer amount of flavors, ingredients than Italy does.

This has to do with the fact that the Greek world has been ranging from Middle-South Italy all the way to all of Anatolia which has been thousands of years Greek civilization, The influences of the Franks, it's own 5000 years of civilization of cooking, differing from place to place, from island to island, then the Byzantine Greek empire of which Constantinople was the core which was the culinary hub far and wide with Thessaloniki being second, which has been very rich in a tapestry of ingredients and recipes on top of the already many layers of other recipes over it's rich culinary depth. So make no mistake that Even though Greece is an extremely all rounded cuisine, it's also extremely perfectionist in flavors in every direction
