  1. Cozy restaurant located next to the beach, with beautiful sea view. Service is quick, professional and on point. We didn’t know how big portions are, so we asked for advice. It was great decision, because we would end up with too much food (as you can see on photos, portions are quite big and fish is served with side!).
Everything we ate was delicious (including surprise sweets we got together with bill).

  2. The taverna’s assortment of classical Cretan starters includes dolmades, fava, tzatziki, grilled vegetables, tirokafteri, and fish roe salad. If fortune smiles, you might secure fried barbouni, or red mullet, a small yet flavor-packed fish. While these catch-of-the-day options are on the pricier side, they remain more affordable than those found in central restaurants. Options like mullet, sea bass, squid, octopus, and calamari are considerably cheaper than what you would find in the city center at Kastella or Ligo Krasi Ligo Thalassa, and equally delightful.

I had hoped to relish barbouni, but it was unavailable, likely due to its high demand. Instead, I opted for grilled sardine fillets, which were exquisite alongside the house wine. As starters, the sardines were accompanied by cheese balls, fava, and grilled mushrooms, making for a satisfying meal without ordering a main course. While all dishes were expertly prepared, the vinegar on the grilled mushrooms was a slight disappointment, masking the charred taste I had eagerly anticipated.

A meal comprising four starters, a main dish for my husband, and drinks totaled just over €50—a pleasant surprise.

  3. We’ve dined at Ta Kalitera a few times but only recently got back for an amazing experience. The fish taverna by the sea is Heraklion’s best, and one of the three or four best on Crete. Situated right on the beach, the laid back taverna offers a simple but delectable menu. I had the most amazing filleted sea bass, maybe the best I ever tasted.

Perfect fava, fried cheese balls that melted in our mouths, everything was fresh, top notch, a perfect seafood night. The sunsets here are great too. And, if you like to dig your toes in that sand and then wash them off in a beautiful aquamarine bath… Well, the atmosphere cannot be beat.

If there was any negative on this night it was a slightly less friendly staff, but then they were pretty busy.

Short version, go here if you want seafood at the beach in Heraklion.
