Fussy, female Aussie traveller here, and boy, was my month long stay here epic!
This was a lovely, clean apartment! I had the budget room, and while small, it had both sea and mountain views! Stove top and air con in full working condition, and hot showers with excellent water pressure every day. It’s about 500m to the beach and a 2-minute walk to grocery, cafes, bakery, hairdresser, and even a gym! Drinking water 30 seconds away! The area is quiet but close to the action. You can walk from port, even with wheel luggage, no need for a taxi, there’s a hill but it’s not steep. Stavros and Irene were so kind and hospitable, and so was the lovely housekeeper Irini. I highly recommend it and would love to return.
Found Irene 1 while looking on Gmaps for an inexpensive place to stay for a month in Naxos in the April-May time frame. Irene 1 meets that requirement at only $28 per day, Irene 2 would be $38.
First of all, the reviews and photos for Irene 1 are completely mixed up with Irene 2 wherever you look for reviews online, without exception. Irene 1 and 2 are .2 miles apart (as the crow flies, so a bit longer walking). Irene 2 has a pool, 1 does not. You can use the pool at 2 if you stay at 1, if you are willing to walk the distance, no free ride there. Irene 1 no longer has a hot tub mentioned in some reviews, though it once did. While at Irene 1 no snacks that were mentioned in reviews came thru, but Stavros indicated Irene was ill and off in Athens, so this may account for that. So what you get is a nice room, across from a church, which occasionally rings its bells. Sotiros Steet, in front of Irene 1 will take you to the square, about .16 miles away, if you go right out of the entrance to the West. Irene 1 sits up on a hill, so you are walking down to the square (which has a number of good restaurants). If you go the other direction, left, East you will encounter a down staircase, in front of the church, so this is not passable with a car or scooter. Two cars seemed to be in permanent residence in front of Irene 1 anyway, blocking large vehicle traffic, while I was there. Going in the East direction you will quickly (.1 mile) hit the main drag road, which immediately is across from the high school and hospital. Up the street from the high school is To Friends, the well rated closest restaurant, irregularly open (call to see). Along this street there are also some cafes and bakeries. Irene 1 is a good place for a person who doesn’t mind walking up a hill the short distances necessary to come back from nearby restaurants and sights. The room is nice, has cooking facilities, a fridge and dinnerware, AC, wifi, shower with plenty of hot water (room 6 has a nice balcony). No elevator, no complimentary coffee or breakfast, no fan, no USB outlets, no safety lock box, but their is a drip coffee maker, a hot pad, and an electric kettle. The bed is comfortable if a bit hard, and the place is clean. Other than the church bells, there is no real road traffic, as the road is one way and ends at the church with the stairs; so its pretty quiet, particularly if you get room 6 on the backside. Room 6 has wooden shutters so getting the room dark enough to sleep during the day is not problem. Banter from people leaving their rooms could sometimes be heard, but not so much so that it was annoying. It is possible to just barely see the Aegean from the second floor thru the other buildings, which is about a quarter mile away.
Overall this is a good place to cut your vacation bill if you want to stay on Naxos for a long one, and if you don’t mind a little walking. Some people indicated that they got a ride from the ferry to Irene, but Stavros indicated that a taxi should be called when asked if a ride could be had to the airport, so plan for that. No free ride. Also be aware that if for some reason you aren’t happy with Irene 1 during your stay, there are no refunds of your prepayment. On the other hand, Stavros is very prompt in responding to and dealing with any issues you may encounter, via email.
We really enjoyed the 5 days we stayed here. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and quiet. It’s only a ten minute walk to the port area where there are many shops and restaurants. Irene and her son Stavros were attentive, helpful, and kind. Irene brought us homemade cake or cookies in the morning to enjoy with our coffee. We would definitely stay here again.
Stayed a few nights while visiting Naxos. Really friendly owners, clean rooms and in a good location. Highly recommended
What a great little hotel. Rooms are spacious with a decent kitchenette, ours has a little balcony to sit on, dry towels, Irene is lovely, not much English but very welcoming. She’ll do your laundry for 8€ a load which was both cheaper and more convenient than anywhere we found in Naxos Chora.
Good location for both the port (9min walk along the sea front) and the beach (Agios Georgios 5mins)
