Welcome to the National Marine Park of Zakynthos!
Nestled in the heart of the Ionian Sea, the National Marine Park of Zakynthos is a mesmerizing haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Famous for its stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and vibrant culture, it’s no wonder that this destination is a favorite among tourists. The park is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, making it a perfect stop for anyone seeking sun and sea.
A Sanctuary for Loggerhead Turtles
One of the most remarkable features of the park is its role as a nesting ground for loggerhead turtles. This protected area, particularly the beach at Laganas, has designated zones that allow these magnificent creatures to lay their eggs undisturbed. Visitors can witness the efforts of volunteers who tirelessly protect the nests, helping small turtles embark on their journey to the sea. Andrew Wilkinson noted this magical experience, highlighting a turtle’s emergence during his visit.
Unparalleled Scenery
The captivating views of the National Marine Park are unforgettable. As you hike along the trails, you’ll be treated to stunning panoramas of the beach, adorned with the unique turtle nesting structures. “It’s a bit of a climb, but the view is excellent!” remarked tHE.alCHMist, emphasizing the reward that comes with the effort.
The Beauty of Kalamaki Beach
Kalamaki Beach is often considered one of the main attractions within the park. Visitors are greeted by soft sands and a gentle breeze, perfect for sunbathing or simply relaxing. Karolína Landová praised its beauty, noting how delightful it is to watch planes land against this gorgeous backdrop.
Family-Friendly Activities
For families traveling with children, Kalamaki Beach is an excellent choice. The shallow waters provide a safe environment for kids to splash and play. Andrew Wilkinson highlighted that the beach is not only long and wide but also roped off in critical areas, ensuring that young visitors can enjoy safely while respecting turtle habitats.
Nature Trails and Hiking Adventures
For the more adventurous souls, the park offers numerous hiking trails that wind through lush landscapes. The trek towards the taverna at the top rewards visitors with breathtaking views and a chance to savor local cuisine after a long walk. The journey might be lengthy, but the sight from the top is worth every step!
Marine Wildlife Encounters
Visitors to the park often have the chance to see an array of marine wildlife. Swimming alongside turtles, as noted by Adam Jackson, adds an exhilarating experience to a beach day. The rich underwater life invites snorkelers and divers to explore hidden wonders beneath the waves.
Eco-Conscious Beaches
One of the highlights of the beaches in Zakynthos is their natural state. However, this also means that litter can sometimes be a concern. Mick Spanner pointed out that while the views are striking, the presence of litter detracts from the beauty. The park encourages visitors to respect nature and keep the beaches pristine for future generations.
Stunning Beaches with Rocky Features
While many beaches boast soft sands, Kalamaki Beach has its unique charm with rocky features. These distinctions provide incredible photo opportunities and allow for diverse activities like exploring small tide pools. Every patch of rock holds secrets waiting to be discovered!
The Magic of Sea Grass
The presence of seagrass might not be the most aesthetically pleasing for some visitors, as noted by Karolína Landová. However, seagrass plays a vital role in marine ecosystems, contributing to water quality and providing habitats for countless sea creatures. Learning about the ecosystem’s balance can enrich your visit!
Cultural Experiences
Aside from sun and sea, the park offers cultural experiences that shouldn’t be missed. Traditional tavernas serve delicious Greek cuisine, and local festivals often showcase the vibrant culture of Zakynthos.

Nice view of planes landing and taking off, the beach has rocks on the beach and it looks very good! When I was there few days ago the sea was nice but there was a lot of sea grass.
Lovely, long and wide beach. A lot of the rear of the beach is roped off where the loggerhead turtle nests are. A lot of the nests are covered with a small wooden wigwam to protect them. The sea starts out shallow so it is ideal for children. On the day we visited there were volunteers excavating a nest and there was a small turtle starting it’s journey to the sea.
A bit of a climb or hike to get up here but an excellent view of the beach with all the turtle pyramid things.
This is the trail dirt track that goes to either the nudist beach or a hike up the hill to the taverna at the top. Its a long walk but worth it as the taverna is really nice and has fantastic views.
It’s…ok.
It’s not the nicest beach, if I’m honest, by my opinions, it’s a bit of dive (and I’m not talking with a snorkel).
However, I imagine that is due to it being a nesting beach, so there is likely little you can do to it in terms of doing it up a little.
It’s a nice walk from one side of the beach to the other, between Kalamaki and Laganos ( I’d say about 40 minutes but feels shorter).
I did also accidentally got chance to swim with two turtles one evening (they are huge) which was nice.
If you’re in the area, it’s not a bad visit – but I wouldn’t make a special trip for it.
Beautiful beach, shallow sea with sand.Turtle nest area. Only spoiled by the sheer amount of litter along the beach and if you look behind the rocky cliff you could easily fill a couple of wheelie bins.Shame some tourists don’t give a toss.Good view of airplanes coming in to land over the beach at low height.
