The Gateway: KTEL Samos – Vathy Bus Station
Located in the bustling village of Vathy, the KTEL Samos Bus Station serves as your gateway to the island’s numerous attractions. However, this station often draws mixed reviews from travelers, especially regarding its accessibility and service. But fear not! With a little bit of planning, you can navigate your way to discover the true treasures of Samos.
Unveiling the Charm of Vathy
Vathy, the capital of Samos, is charming with its picturesque port and traditional villages. As you stroll along the waterfront, take a moment to appreciate the quaint cafes and shops that line the shore. The atmosphere is inviting, and you’ll find that interacting with locals can lead to hidden gems off the typical tourist path.
The Culinary Scene
One review highlighted a delightful café in the area, recognized for its good food and friendly atmosphere. This is the perfect spot to recharge after a busy morning of exploring. Enjoy traditional Greek dishes while you soak in the local vibe. Just be mindful of your experience with the bus services after your meal!
Navigating the Bus System
Several reviewers have expressed frustrations with the bus system at the station. The absence of destination signs means you may need to inquire with bus drivers to confirm your route. While some drivers may not provide the friendliest assistance, a little patience can go a long way! Remember, travel experiences vary, and a good attitude can sometimes elicit a better response.
The Great Unknown: No Clear Signs
Finding the bus station can be a challenge, as it lacks visible signage. One traveler noted that the only indication is a hidden timetable tucked away at a corner. If you’re planning to explore by bus, prepare for a bit of a scavenger hunt—ask around to find where the buses are heading!
Punctuality and Availability
When using the bus service, it’s essential to keep in mind that buses can fill up quickly. One traveler recounted a situation where they had to wait for an hour for the next bus due to capacity issues. For flexibility, consider having alternative transport options available, like renting a car, to avoid unnecessary delays.
Beware of Tourist Traps
Actively looking out for potential scams can save you from unwanted surprises. A traveler experienced a situation where the bus ticket seller miscounted their change. Always double-check your transactions, and keep an eye out for common pitfalls.
Balancing Positives and Negatives
Despite the challenges with public transportation, there are positive aspects that travelers noted, including the friendliness of certain staff members and the overall charm of the service. It’s important to balance expectations and be prepared for a mixed experience.
The Heart of the Island
While exploring Vathy, it’s an excellent opportunity to delve into Samos’s history. The island is renowned for its ancient ruins, vineyards, and scenic beaches. Ask locals for recommendations of the best spots to explore, as they may lead you to lesser-known treasures.
Embracing Island Adventures
From hiking trails that lead to breathtaking vistas to beaches that invite you to unwind, Samos is a haven for adventure-seekers. Engage with the local culture during festivals, or join a wine-tasting tour to experience the island’s famed wine production firsthand.
The Aftertaste of Experience
As with any travel situation, experiences vary from person to person. While some may have had negative encounters, many travelers leave with cherished memories and stories that define their time on the island. Embrace your adventure, and remember to keep an open mind.

The cafe is nice, with good food and drinks, and friendly staff. However, I have to leave a negative review due to the bus system. As others have mentioned, the drivers are extremely rude. The buses lack destination signs, so you have to ask the drivers, who respond with minimal effort and poor attitudes, making you feel like a burden. A simple solution would be to place signs on the bus windows.
Additionally, there’s a door next to the cafe with an intercom for information. Unfortunately, the person on the other end is also rude and seems to dislike their job, or perhaps just tourists, judging by the way he answers questions.
Overall, the bus system is poorly designed and staffed with unhelpful and unfriendly personnel.
Altough the name says that it is a station it’s not, there isn’t even a bus sign on the road only a time table hidden behind a corner. The only way to know the place has something to do with busses is that there are a couple of them parked infront of a taverna.
So the way you do this is, like others have stated, ask every bus driver that stops there around the time of departure where he is heading.
There are also very few bus lanes so if you are unlucky and the bus you want to take is full it will leave without you and the next one is 1h away or there isn’t a new one at all.
Putting ibto considuration all mentioned above we got a rent car instead of dealing with this stressfull sistem.
Heads up. The blond middleage woman selling bustickets gave back far too little change – a common scam in some countries. I got the change when I pointed it out. Highly doubt it was an honest mistake.
Wish I could give 5* to bus station but few times they were full and asked to wait for next..in few hours and lost baggage was very hard to get.
