A Fresh Twist on Greek Salad: A Simple and Delicious Recipe

If you’re on the hunt for a delicious and easy-to-make salad that bursts with Mediterranean flavors, look no further than this classic Greek salad. Brimming with fresh ingredients like cucumbers, tomatoes, feta cheese, and Kalamata olives, it’s a dish that’s not just about filling your plate—it’s about celebrating flavor. Let’s dive right in!

From Heritage to the Table

Greetings, culinary adventurers! I’m John from Preppy Kitchen, and today, I’m excited to share a recipe that honors my Greek roots. A Greek salad is more than just a dish—it’s a celebration of vibrant ingredients and heartfelt memories. Growing up, my time in my grandfather’s machine shop often revolved around enjoying real Greek meals, featuring simple yet flavorful salads as the centerpiece.

The Heart of the Salad: Fresh Produce

To craft this refreshing Greek salad, our star ingredient is a large English cucumber. With its thin skin left intact, the flavor shines through without any peeling required. Just slice it into rounds or cut it lengthwise into manageable half-moons. If you prefer standard cucumbers, feel free to peel them—it’s all up to your taste.

Adding a Splash of Zesty Onions

Next, grab a red onion to add some depth to your salad. By slicing it thinly, you maximize the surface area, allowing the acidity in your dressing to mellow out its sharpness. The result? A delightful burst of flavor without the overwhelming onion punch. Tailor the amount of onion to suit your preference—after all, this is your salad!

Olive the Goodness

Now, let’s bring in one of my personal favorites: Kalamata olives. These briny gems add a wonderful burst of taste. Aim for about a third of a cup and chop them in half. Even though they’re pitted, it’s wise to slice them to avoid any dental surprises. Trust me, a good olive is always welcome in a Greek salad!

Tomato Time: Choose Your Style

Next up are the tomatoes. For this recipe, I recommend three ripe tomatoes sliced into convenient wedges. The idea is to ensure each forkful is perfectly balanced. If you’re a fan of cherry tomatoes, they make a delightful substitute too!

Crunchy Bell Pepper for Texture

Let’s add a classic twist with some bell pepper. Slice it up after removing the seeds and ribs, as this will lend a lovely crunch to our salad. The sweet, refreshing flavor of bell peppers melds beautifully with our other ingredients.

The Creaminess of Feta

Atmosphere of flavor intensifies with the addition of feta cheese—seven ounces brings a creamy, tangy dimension to the mix. Crumble it over the salad, reserving a little to sprinkle on top for an attractive garnish. Feta is not just food; it’s an experience all on its own!

Crafting the Perfect Dressing

Now for the pièce de résistance: the dressing. Start with a quarter cup of extra virgin olive oil, then zing it up with some lemon zest from half a lemon. Fresh thyme and oregano aren’t just for garnish; they are essential for elevating the dish. By bruising these herbs, you unleash their aromatic oils, amplifying the flavors.

The Acidity Balance

Continuing with the dressing, mix in about two tablespoons of red wine vinegar and a hint of honey mustard for extra depth and a touch of sweetness. Don’t forget the juice of half a lemon—this will brighten up the entire salad!

Shake It Up!

The final steps involve shaking everything together to emulsify the dressing. Taste it to refine the flavors—maybe a little more salt or lemon juice. The dressing will interact beautifully with the ingredients, creating that classic Greek salad taste we all know and love.

Tossing It All Together

With everything now prepared, it’s time to dress the salad lavishly. Pour the dressing over the cucumber mixture, and give it a gentle toss to coat every piece with that zesty goodness. Don’t worry about wilting; this is a salad that not only lasts but gets better as the flavors meld.

Garnishing for Flair

For a finishing touch, sprinkle extra crushed oregano and the reserved feta on top. These final details make your Greek salad as visually appealing as it is tasty! Prepare for delightful compliments when you serve this at your next gathering or family dinner.

A Taste of the Mediterranean

At last, take a moment to taste your creation. Expect an explosion of fresh cucumbers, tangy feta, and briny olives. This Greek salad is a harmonious blend of texture and flavor, making it the perfect meal or side dish any day of the week.

  2. That looks great! But I was surprised, no lettuce or Romaine? So many times when I order a Greek salad to go for lunch, it's a HUGE amount of Romaine and a teeny tiny bit of all the other ingredients.

  3. Thank you for sharing this recipe. Please, show us how to make some of the Fadi's Mediterranean Bar & Grill, because it is just TOO EXPENSIVE to eat out any more. They are a great place to eat, but most of us that used to eat there at $10/$12 (year or two ago) aren't able to eat there anymore with the $25/$30 dollar meal price-tags.
