Discovering Corfu: The Jewel of the Greek Islands

An Adventurous Welcome to Corfu

Good morning, fellow travelers! Today marks the second day of our journey on the stunning island of Corfu, one of the most captivating Greek islands. If you caught our last video, you know we ventured to some off-the-beaten-path spots. This time, however, we’re diving into the island’s popular tourist attractions, starting our adventure at the iconic Poto Tumani beach!

First Impressions: A Beach Like No Other

As we parked for a modest five euros, we were greeted by a short trail leading us to what promises to be one of the most gorgeous beaches on the island. On a cliff’s edge, this is the famed St. George’s Beach we had intended to stay closer to. Unfortunately, due to a last-minute cancellation of our accommodation, we found ourselves about 30 minutes away from this picturesque locale. Still, the stunning views have us eager to explore.

The Journey Begins

Trekking down the trail for about 15 minutes, we caught sight of a twin beach flanked by calm, crystalline waters. Surprisingly, there weren’t many tourists at this hour, likely because most visitors take their time with breakfast before starting their day around noon. Arriving early at 8:30 a.m. allowed us to bask in the tranquility of this stunning spot.

A Rocky Road to Paradise

As we navigate the rocky terrain, it’s wise to wear sturdy shoes, especially as we approach the beach. And as we reach our destination, we are spellbound by the beauty surrounding us. A boat glides by, showcasing the lazy option for those preferring not to walk. Here, alongside the soft waves, you can indulge in activities like kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding in this serene setting.

Reveling in the Beauty of Corfu

With two hours and many breathtaking views behind us, the beach began to fill up around noon. However, it maintained a laid-back atmosphere, characteristic of the visitors drawn to Corfu. We made our way to the second beach on our agenda, which was somewhat smaller and more rugged but equally inviting.

Lunch with a View

After a refreshing swim, we decided to grab a bite to eat at a charming restaurant we spotted earlier. The Mitos Taverna impressed us with its scenic vistas and delicious seafood menu. Dining on fresh fish while soaking in the laid-back ambiance made for an unforgettable experience.

Discovering Rovinia Beach

Our next stop was Rovinia Beach, where we encountered a steep and somewhat chaotic entrance. Parking for three euros, we were rewarded with stunning views and rocky shores. This beach buzzed with energy but still offered plenty of room for relaxation.

Nature’s Masterpiece

As we admired the stunning landscape, with its hilltop views and lush greenery, we couldn’t help but draw comparisons to the Amalfi Coast in Italy. This close proximity to Italy may be the reason for some visual similarities, such as the comical trees dotting the landscape that bring Tuscany to mind.

Embracing Corfu’s Hidden Gems

Before departing for our next adventure, we stumbled upon a dramatic cave at the end of the beach. This captivating find was filled with other beachgoers looking for a bit of shade. The cave sported a mysterious blue hue, enhancing the magical atmosphere of the beach.

A Stroll Through Corfu Town

After a couple of beach expeditions, it was time to discover the island’s main town. The drive was a mere 30 minutes but felt like a different experience from the coastal environment. The tall buildings and wider streets gave Corfu Town an urban feel reminiscent of mainland cities.

Uncovering the Old Town’s Charm

As we wandered deeper into the old town, we were immediately struck by its unique architecture. Unlike the quaint villages on other Greek islands, Corfu Town boasts an expansive layout with plenty of delightful alleyways and vibrant cafes. Stumbling upon squares adorned with charming paintings and echoing church bells created an inviting ambiance.

Venitian Influences

A significant point of interest here is the Venetian influence on the architecture, a product of 400 years of Venetian rule. This distinct style sets Corfu apart, with its arched pathways and striking buildings offering a visual feast for explorers. It was unexpected and delightful for us, as we hadn’t done much research prior to visiting this enchanting town.

A Cultural Experience

As our journey continued, we were enveloped in the sounds of a local marching band, adding to the festive atmosphere. The town buzzed with energy, and we were eager to soak it all in before we headed back.

Corfu’s Time-Honored Forts

On our way to the old forts, we marveled at the sight of these historic structures standing tall against the skyline. The imperious forts stand resolute on rocky outcrops, guarding the secrets of the past. Although we didn’t venture inside due to our growing fatigue, we appreciated the chance to witness such rich history.

Wrapping Up Our Corfu Adventure

As we prepare to wrap up our journey in Corfu, we can’t help but feel that this stunning island holds a special place in our hearts. The secret beaches, to captivating Corfu Town, have made our trip truly unforgettable. Tonight, we board a flight heading to Nepal, excited for the new adventures that await in Southeast Asia!

  1. I've enjoyed all of your videos in every country you've been to. Did you ever consider visiting Cyprus…both South and North….beautiful island. Lovely beaches country side and lots of history

  2. Gotta say, this video actually puts me off visiting Corfu. It’s beautiful for sure, but very touristy and way too many people. Going to beaches with hundreds of other people all around you is just not enjoyable.

  3. Beautiful for tourists, but, not for corfiots…their properties being stolen by Europe…corfiots were free to live a subsistence life before joining the euro..it has destroyed the country

  4. I've just left there 9 days ago (monday 5th sep) so the same day as you I guess, or the day after. We visited the new fortress and from the top we were looking over at the old fortress where you were.

  5. Corfu is my 2nd favourite being so GREEN and spectacular. But nothing beats the unspoiled paths and beaches of Crete! 🤩 You should explore next time when in Greece.
You are an inspiration, keep on going! Fast recovery for Chris in Nepal! 🤞
