Discovering MOD Santorini: A Fully Vegan Escape in Greece

When one thinks of luxurious getaways in Greece, the picturesque island of Santorini inevitably comes to mind. However, MOD Santorini is not just any hotel; it proudly stands as the first fully vegan hotel on this stunning island, offering an unparalleled experience for plant-based travelers. If you’re seeking a retreat that celebrates veganism in every aspect, this might just be your next destination.

The All-Vegan Experience

Upon landing at Santorini’s airport, I was greeted warmly by the hotel’s owners, who whisked me away to the property, ensuring that my vegan journey began on a high note. Opened in March 2022, MOD Santorini was still in its finishing phases during my visit in January of that year, but the ambiance was already inviting and fresh. The moment I stepped into my room, it exuded a calming minimalistic charm, harmoniously designed with vegan principles in mind, from the bedding to the furniture.

Room with a View

Staying in the Beta Suite, I was fortunate enough to enjoy breathtaking views of the famous Caldera and the Aegean Sea. With a private jacuzzi on the balcony, the room’s allure was undeniable, especially at a winter rate of 200 euros per night. Even though more budget-friendly options exist, the calming aesthetics and the serene view certainly justified the expense.

Culinary Delights Await

Food enthusiasts will be thrilled to discover that at MOD Santorini, the culinary experience goes beyond merely offering vegan meals. Each dining option was crafted with love, showcasing a variety of flavorful vegan dishes. Upon my arrival, I was treated to a delightful meeze board, featuring a delectable selection of olives, hummus, and sweets that perfectly complemented the savory elements.

A Taste of Greek Vegan Cuisine

On my first day, I decided to explore the nearby village of Fira. While soaking in the local sights, the hotel’s co-owner, Christina, prepared a hearty lunch featuring flavorful Greek big beans alongside well-paired sides, showcasing the simplicity of plant-based ingredients. Later, for dinner, I had the chance to try their pad thai; while tasty, I felt it could have used more vibrant flavor without the accompanying sauces.

Unique Breakfast Experiences

Breakfast at MOD Santorini was an adventure each day, where I could choose between items or let Christina surprise me. The chocolate hazelnut pancakes caught my eye, and while they were delicious with the fruits, I found their texture a bit chewy, differing from my expectations of fluffy pancakes. Nevertheless, the tangy yogurt paired with granola presented a delightful contrast of flavors.

Exploring New Horizons

The second day took me to Pyrgos and other captivating villages and beaches, including Perissa and Kamari. For lunch, the mushroom gyros served with tzatziki was a standout dish, bursting with flavor despite its non-meaty preparation. Dinner that evening introduced me to a scrumptious pesto pasta dish, following which I indulged in a chocolate-peanut butter layered ice cream that provided a wonderful balance of flavors.

A Culinary Roller Coaster

As my stay continued, I savored another breakfast, this time featuring a unique chickpea omelet. Elsewhere in town, I visited a vegetarian restaurant recently turned completely vegan, called 5 Senses, which was part of an all-inclusive package. While the dishes were visually appealing, I found that some were paired with unanticipated sweet sauces, causing flavor clashes with savory items.

Making the Most of the Final Days

On my fourth day, a smoothie bowl adorned with fresh toppings invigorated my morning. Our daily excursions led us to scenic viewpoints and hidden beaches across the island. A surprise picnic in Oia to watch the sunset unfolded as another highlight. With the idyllic backdrop, I enjoyed a stuffed bell pepper, complete with tomato salad—all vegan and utterly delicious.

Concluding the Stay

The final morning revealed a delightful grilled cheese accompanied by sautéed mushrooms. Even with the slight disappointment of the cheese’s non-melted state, the meal was satisfying. My last venture involved a tangy yogurt mixed with blueberries, all before saying goodbye to my beautiful room at MOD Santorini.

The Pros and Cons of MOD Santorini

Reflecting on my time at the hotel, there were several upsides to consider. Accessibility features like a built-in shower seat offered convenience, yet the lack of a lift and railings could pose challenges for some guests. The swift, friendly service from Christina and the tranquil location added immense value to my stay. Conversely, I experienced some concerns about slow Wi-Fi speeds and chilly room temperatures due to the marble flooring.

Overall Impressions

In summary, my time at MOD Santorini was worthwhile and genuinely enjoyable. The combination of exceptional hospitality, delicious food, and serene surroundings created a memorable atmosphere. I eagerly look forward to returning to this vegan haven, whether in summer for the vibrant energy or winter for a peaceful retreat.
