Discover the Best Greek Islands to Visit in 2024: An Ultimate Travel Guide
Are you daydreaming about your next vacation? Greece is calling! As a proud Greek, I must admit that despite my familiarity with many islands, there are still some I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting. However, I want to share with you my current favorites among the stunning Greek islands. Without further delay, let’s dive into my vibrant selection for your 2024 travel plans!
9. Ios: The Hidden Gem of the Cyclades
First on our list is Ios, the eighth largest island in the Cyclades. Nestled between Naxos and Santorini, this hilly haven is celebrated for its classic Cycladic architecture and crystal-clear azure waters. Spend idyllic days unwinding at Mylopotas Beach, meandering through the charming streets of Ios Chora, and catching a breathtaking sunset from the Chapel of Agios Nikolaos or the Odysseas Elytis Amphitheater. While Ios has gained fame as an international party hotspot from June to August, visiting in the off-peak season reveals a serene, enchanting side of the island, making it truly one of the best Greek islands to explore.
8. Zakynthos: A Natural Paradise
Next, we venture to Zakynthos, also known as Zante. This island is home to the breathtaking Shipwreck Beach and serves as a sanctuary for the endangered caretta caretta turtle. The iconic Shipwreck Beach, which can only be reached by boat, showcases brilliant turquoise waters and soft, white sand, all framed by stunning cliffs. While peak season brings crowds, the viewpoints are worth the buzz. Other crystal-clear swimming spots like Korakonisi and Porto Limnionas also await exploration. A highlight of our Zakynthos trip was a scenic boat tour to Marathonisi, Keri Caves, and Mizithra Beach, capped off with sunset views at Keri Lighthouse.
7. Naxos: The Largest Cyclades Island
At number seven, we find Naxos, the largest island in the Cyclades chain. Known for its lush landscapes, ancient ruins, and extensive beach stretches, Naxos is often overlooked, making it an enticing secret for travelers. The capital, Hora, boasts whitewashed houses, charming Venetian mansions, and a historic castle. Discover the iconic Portara and explore the island’s rich heritage through its ancient sites. Outdoor enthusiasts can hike Mount Zas and explore typical mountain villages like Apeiranthos and Filoti. Don’t miss out on Naxos’ stunning beaches, including Agia Anna and Plaka.
6. Kefalonia: The Filming Location You Must Visit
Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands, comes in at number six. This picturesque island, known for its capital Argostoli that lies atop a hillside overlooking a tranquil harbor, became famous as the backdrop for “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.” Kefalonia features exotic beaches, charming villages, and natural wonders that paint a magical landscape. Renowned beaches like Myrtos, Antisamos, and Xi Beach are perfect for relaxation. Adventurers can explore Mount Enos or the enchanting Melissani Lake Cave.
5. Corfu: A Romantic Retreat
Corfu deserves a spot on your itinerary as one of the most captivating and romantic destinations in the Ionian Sea. With lush green hills, exquisite mansions, stunning beaches, and rich museums, Corfu has something for every kind of traveler. Start your journey in Corfu Town, where you can wander cobblestone alleys, relax at the Spianada square, or discover historical sights like the Achillion Palace. Don’t forget to roam the scenic coastlines featuring breathtaking spots, including Paleokastritsa and Cape Drastis.
4. Milos: A Colorful Slice of Paradise
The fourth spot goes to Milos, an island adorned with colorful landscapes and a stunning coastline that boasts over 60 unique beaches. Known for its striking natural beauty, Milos is famed for the stunning Sarakiniko Beach, where bright white cliffs meet sparkling waters. Accessible primarily by boat, Kleftiko offers dramatic rock formations and captivating sunsets. Explore the island’s charming fishing villages like Klima and Firopotamos, each with delightful accommodations and vibrant hues.
3. Santorini: A Dreamy Destination
Santorini lovers may be surprised to find this iconic island at number three, but despite its popularity, it remains a breathtaking destination. Famous for its dramatic caldera views and the striking beauty of its whitewashed buildings against turquoise seas, Santorini features unforgettable sunsets at Oia and Fira. While it’s often overshadowed by its picturesque landscape, the island also has impressive beaches and authentic villages worth exploring. Make sure to visit the volcanic beaches of Red, White, and Black Beach for a unique experience.
2. Karpathos: The Untainted Beauty
Karpathos stands out as the runner-up on this list, flaunting its wild landscapes and gorgeous beaches that maintain an authentic charm. Only the southern part of the island is developed, allowing visitors to experience true Greek culture. Visit the enchanting village of Olympos, known for its traditional windmills and brightly colored churches. Other villages like Menetes and Arkasa add to the island’s allure, ensuring a unique experience away from the crowds.
1. Crete: The Crown Jewel of the Greek Islands
Claiming the number one spot is Crete, the largest Greek island known for its unparalleled blend of stunning natural beauty, rich culture, and world-renowned gastronomy. After living here for over a decade, I can assure you that there is always something new to discover. With pristine beaches such as Balos and Elafonisi, numerous hiking routes, and vibrant villages, Crete is a treasure trove waiting to be explored. If you’re a foodie, the local cuisine is a global sensation, making it a must-visit location in Greece.

Nice guide!
Anyone who is going to Greece. Here is my advice. Land in Athens, take the train from the airport to Athens. Spend 3 days in Athens, unwind and do all the touristy things. Then get the next plane out of Athens and head straight to Crete. Crete will not disappoint. It has everything and more than all the other islands have. Well that's my opinion.

Terrible Heat or?
Crete, of course. The cradle of civilisation. Good , drink food , charming locals, need I say anymore. Proud to be born there in Ierapetra province. Living in Norwich England. I am on the island right now, on holiday. I come here every summer, I can’t stay away to long. It’s June 2024. Thanks a lot for the introduction of all the islands. ❤ Georgios 🇬🇷✝️🇬🇧

Breathtaking video!❤ Greetings from Hungary!🥰
I love your video. I've been watching a lot about Greek Islands to explore, and yours is my favorite. I have a question, particularly after seeing your description of Crete. I've read online that wild camping is not allowed anywhere in Greece. I've an avid backpacker, and enjoy long multinight overnight hikes in the mountains near where I live. It seems there are places to explore by foot in Crete that would require multiple days of walking. Is there any way to camp with the leave-no-trace ethic in Crete? Or anywhere in Greece?
You missed the best in Skiathos, also Skopelos and Alonnisos also.Perfect photography locations, and even went a second time to confirm my love of those three islands.
Fantastic video, I returned last week from my first visit to Greece having spent a wonderful week in Crete, it really was a fantastic holiday, beautiful mountain villages and coastline and Iook forward to seeing more of your amazing country in the future 🩵💙🩵
Doing some early research for a 2025 trip and this reinforces our thoughts that Crete will be the primary location we’ll be exploring outside of Athens. Great video and REALLY appreciate the other links to restaurants and hikes in Crete.
Thank you for this video, it's very informative. Kos island didn't make your list, I'll be there this Saturday ❤😊
Corfu is the best
I was really interested in your video but couldn’t stand the music, it is too loud and distracting. Your voice kept getting lost in the frenetic pace of the music.
