A castle over the Chora (capital) of Kythera. Its buildings and surrounding structures are in relatively good shape. Exceptional view, great for photos. During August you could also have the tree opportunity to view the liturgy at the old chapel.
Kithira Castle offers breathtaking views of Kapsali and Hydra. Our visit was made even more special thanks to our guide, Helen, who shared delightful stories about the castle. Highly recommend this experience!
The island’s most characteristic monument is the castle of Chora in Kithira! The castle or “Fortezza” was built in the 13th century when Kythera was dominated by the Venetians. It is a must visit monument! The “Eye of Crete” as it was also called due to its strategic position, providing the observance of ships on three seas simultaneously – the Ionian, Aegean and Cretan, was built over different phases of the island’s history, but the biggest and main part including the facade was built in 1503 by the Venetians, who repaired and reconstructed it. At the castle’s entrance you can see the tunnel or else “fossa”! The Venetian emblem of the lion of St. Mark used to be on that front wall, but it was destroyed along with the Nobility Book and the coats of arms by the French in 1797. On the left side of the castle’s entrance you can see the prison and a little further up on the right of the southwest part the huge Venetian reservoir with domes and arches. Times that it is open for visits are 09:00 to 20:00!
Unbelievable the state of this Castle. Total Neglect by Local Council and the Peripheral Government Body…
They should invest up grade to a reasonable level with information about the Castle and charge A responsible entrance fee for its upkeep and a guide about its History…

The Castle of Kythira is the most characteristic monument of the island. It is built on a large elevated area in Chora of Kythira, overlooking the south. The castle was called “Fortezza” (Fortress in Italian), like many other Venetian castles in other parts of Greece. It also had the nickname “Eye of Crete” because of its strategic position that allowed the observation of navigation in three seas at the same time: Ionian, Aegean and Cretan. Today (June 2022) shows signs of abandonment, free entrance, view unlimited.
