Discovering Ikaria: A Tourist’s Guide to the Captain Ikaros Experience
A Dream Destination Gone Awry
Ikaria, renowned for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture, is a sought-after destination for travelers. However, not all experiences on this beautiful island live up to the allure. One such example is Captain Ikaros, which has garnered mixed reviews from visitors, highlighting a need for potential travelers to be well-informed before considering a stay.
The Allure of a Treehouse
The idea of staying in a charming treehouse nestled among the trees could excite any nature lover. Unfortunately, the reality of accommodations at Captain Ikaros has fallen short for many. Many guests had expectations of quaint decor and nature-inspired comforts, only to encounter unexpected inconveniences.
The Kitchen Conundrum
One of the primary attractions at Captain Ikaros was the promised kitchen facilities, enticing guests to cook and enjoy local ingredients. Regrettably, numerous reviews reported that this essential feature was misleadingly advertised, with guests finding no appropriate cooking appliances or utensils—crucial for any self-catering experience.
Unpleasant Surprises: The Treehouse Experience
While a treehouse may sound enchanting, multiple reviewers described their disappointment upon arrival. Understandably, a rustic ambiance is expected, but an “infected tree” in the center of the room? That’s a far cry from what visitors envisioned. Cleanliness and functionality should remain essentials in any accommodation, but sadly, that has not been the case for many guests.
A Bathroom Better Left Unseen
In several reviews, bathrooms were described as outdated and unsatisfactory. Cases of stained fixtures and awkward shower layouts led to a less-than-pleasant experience. Guests have emphasized the importance of cleanliness and comfort; unfortunately for many, Captain Ikaros has not delivered.
Subpar Grounds and Amenities
The expansive grounds of Captain Ikaros were anticipated as a delightful aspect of the stay—alas, they turned out to be poorly maintained. With an abandoned pool and untended gardens, guests lamented their inability to enjoy the natural beauty that Ikaria has to offer.
A Chained Companion
Travelers are often drawn to places that showcase the local wildlife and culture. However, the sight of a distressed dog chained for extended periods during guests’ stays left many feeling uncomfortable. Guests expressed a need for greater respect and care for animals as part of the hospitality experience.
High Prices for a Lack of Service
The disparity between the price charged and the quality of service was a recurring theme in guest reviews. Many felt that for the hefty price of €200 per night, guests should experience a higher standard of service, cleanliness, and modern amenities. Unfortunately, Captain Ikaros fell short of these expectations.
The Unfriendly Face of Management
One of the most common concerns raised by visitors was the perceived disengagement of the owner. A friendly and engaging host can make all the difference in the hospitality industry, yet guests frequently noted a lack of warmth and attentiveness, resulting in a stark absence of genuine customer care.
One Foothold: The Helpful Staff Member
Amidst the criticism, guests found solace in the presence of a young staff member who strived to address their concerns. His commendable efforts stand out as a positive aspect within an otherwise lackluster experience, demonstrating the impact of individual commitment in the hospitality business.
What Lies Beneath the Surface
Despite the stunning natural scenery of Ikaria, Captain Ikaros has demonstrated a continued struggle to meet even basic expectations. With guests remarking on its various shortcomings and its inability to fulfill promises, it’s clear that the establishment is not yet ready for a satisfied visiting public.
Life in Disrepair
The array of unsolicited construction observed on the property further attests to the ongoing developmental issues at Captain Ikaros. Guests spoke of unkempt spaces and the general feeling that the facilities were not prepared for visitors. The heavy construction left lingering doubts about the readiness of this accommodation.
Rethinking Your Stay
Many reviewers, reflecting on their overall experiences, have encouraged potential visitors to reconsider lodging at Captain Ikaros. With an overwhelming number of dissatisfaction points, making an informed choice becomes paramount for tourists seeking enjoyable stays.
A Final Verdict
Travelers to Ikaria are urged to weigh their accommodation options carefully, assessing not only amenities but also prior guest experiences. While Captain Ikaros appears visually appealing, the reports suggest a substantial gap in expectations versus reality.
Embracing Ikaria
Ultimately, Ikaria and its enchanting beauty offer opportunities beyond Captain Ikaros. Tourists can explore vibrant villages, discover untouched beaches, and relish the local cuisine, ensuring a fulfilling travel experience despite potential missteps in accommodation.
Takeaway Points for Travelers
As you plan your adventure in Ikaria, remember to gauge prospective accommodations against reviews, especially highlighting cleanliness, service, and availability of advertised amenities. Avoiding places that have steered guests wrong in the past will lead to better travel memories.
Planning Your Journey
By prioritizing thorough research and reflecting on collective guest experiences, prospective visitors can unlock the true beauty of Ikaria without being let down by a disappointing stay. As the island beckons, make wise choices, and savor all that this destination has to offer.

I am incredibly disappointed that I didnt read the reviews before we booked this place. We stayed here in early October and because we were staying in Ikaria for a week we chose a place that had the possibility to use a kitchen for making our own food. What a disappointment that was. Our accommodation which was a treehouse was indeed one but with an infected tree in the middle of the room. No facilities to make coffee/tea nor food. The bathroom in the house given to us initially was outdated and stained. We asked to have a different room which the young man helped with. The bathroom in this hut was ok but the shower is in a slanting corner so you will have to squat or bend to take a shower. The grounds as described aren’t that well kept. The pool was under construction they said – but it just looked abandoned. There was also a poor dog held in chains the whole duration we were there. For what is charged for this place I think you should get a hotel because this is an overpriced glamping hut.
I stayed at Captain Ikaros early october 2024.
I chose it for a number of reasons, but got quite disappointed. First of all. It was stated on the web page that there was access to a kitchen, such that it was possible to cook. This was untrue, when I asked on the spot I was told this was not possible. Secondly, the pool area is secluded from the accomodation and there was no water in the pool and the pool area was poorly maintained and not a place one would want to spend time.
We had booked the tree Hut, but luckily we were moved to a different housing. The tree Hut had some fungus on the tree.
The Hut we got instead was quite ok, but the place is overpriced, it is glamping at best, but charge as if it is a rented appartment.
The owner is unfriendly and disengaged, he has staff fixing his garden, but does not seem to care about his guests. He has a big dog chained 24/7, which was rather sad to see. He has hired a young Man to handle all inquiries from guests, that man was helpful and thanks to him I gave this place a star.
Please chose somewhere else, I wish I had read the other reviews instead of trusting the webpage.
place to avoid, one of the worst experiences of my life!!!! I don’t know how to define this place, hotel? or holiday home? no one comes to make up the room so it’s not a hotel! It doesn’t have a fork, plate or knife, but it has an island with a sink without a hob and I don’t know what to wash? The third bed is placed on a brick shelf much higher than normal, so if you need the bathroom at night there is a risk of falling, the Internet works at times you have to turn the wifi extender off and on again even in the middle of the night in the garden, I wonder what service it is? where we stayed the stone floors and walls are those of the pavements roads of the island, therefore not really clean as they are porous, it looks like a camping bungalow, bathroom without a towel around the shower and therefore floods with every shower… for the modest sum of €200 per night without breakfast and no assistance, noone replay at the phone when calling them , on the second day I saw a gentleman who seemed to be from the local staff and after greeting him I didn’t receive any response there is no reception there is no type of assistance, you have to send whatsapp and wait … to get there the private road is completely damaged and bumpy with large potholes, there is a risk of damaging the car. I’m giving a star because I don’t know how to give a cross, they won’t see me again
⛔️ This hotel is not ready for guests and a no go! Garden and most of outdoor facilities are under heavy construction and rebuilding. Pool was in awful condition, extremely filthy and full of animals. There are building tools and equipment outside which is a sign this place is not ready for rent. Room was smelling and up a narrow staircase and extremely uncomfortable. We decided to leave immediately and cannot recall finding a facility anywhere as in anywhere in worse shape. Cannot recommend anything or anyone to book this place. It’s absolutely a disgrace to call this place a hotel and charge this amount of money!
This was the worst room I’ve stayed in over 20 years. Maybe if it was 20E a night it would make sense – although I don’t think it’s adhering to any code and should probably not be licensed. At 120E it was just ridiculous. The whole property shows the owner does not know what it means to be in the hospitality business – the place has no service except one excellent, valiant young man named Anestis trying to do everything. It’s very poorly maintained. The owner by the way was there during our 1-night stay and said “I’m the owner but I’m a tourist here myself”. Location is really hard to find, has a nice view.
In short, avoid.
