Welcome to the Berengaria Hotel: A Glimpse into History and Luxury
A Legacy of Royalty
Nestled in the majestic Troodos Mountains, the Berengaria Hotel stands as a testament to elegance and history. Named after Queen Berengaria, the bride of Richard the Lionheart, this iconic structure opened its doors in 1931 and quickly became a symbol of luxury for both locals and international travelers. Jamie Elizondo, a history buff, muses: "It’s like stepping back into an era when kings and knights roamed these halls!"
Reviving a Historic Gem
After ceasing operations in 1984, the Berengaria is currently undergoing an exciting renovation. With plans to restore its former glory, the hotel aims to re-establish itself as a premier destination for relaxation and wellness. As Michalis Ch aptly notes, “The hotel will feature 30 rooms and suites, along with a modern spa facility,” promising an extraordinary experience.
Breathtaking Elevation
Located at an elevation of 1400 meters, the hotel offers a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. Whether you’re seeking an adventurous hike or a serene escape, Berengaria serves as the perfect launchpad for exploring the beauty of the Troodos Mountains.
An Enigmatic Experience
Tourists can currently explore the grounds, encountering signs of history and the potential for a magnificent return. K. F. Jacques, an enthusiastic traveler, eagerly shares hints of the hotel’s past grandeur, encouraging all to check out a video entitled "shut it down" on YouTube for a glimpse of what once was.
An Incomplete Adventure
While the renovation is underway, some visitors express mixed feelings about the current state of the hotel. Romino Legero describes it as a “boring lost place,” highlighting that the extensive construction has left the hotel void of excitement at the moment. Nevertheless, the allure of the hotel remains strong in the eyes of many.
A Space of Transformation
Elli Eleftheriou’s dreams of a revitalized Berengaria encapsulate the vision many hold for this historical marvel. She longs for an awakening of luxury and accessibility, envisioning a space “operated in all its glory and luxury.” The ambition is to turn the hotel into a health and relaxation sanctuary afforded by all, not just the elite aristocracy.
Visitors’ Cautionary Tales
Recent accounts indicate that while the hotel grounds are still accessible, entry into the building itself is restricted. Katerina Gulika reported, “all the windows and entrances have been locked or barred,” which signifies the careful measures being taken during the renovation process. The area, unfortunately, suffers from neglect, with debris scattered around—a reminder of the importance of maintaining the site’s beauty.
Anticipation and Excitement
Despite the current state of the hotel, excitement continues to build among potential visitors who are eager for its transformation. With a promising renovation timeline, guests can look forward to experiencing the sophisticated amenities of a modern hotel while being enveloped in historic charm.
A Destination for All Seasons
The Berengaria Hotel is set against a spectacular backdrop that changes with every season. In winter, guests can cozy up by the fireplace while snow blankets the mountains, while summer offers a breath of fresh mountain air and lush greenery. Each visit promises a unique experience, tailored in harmony with nature.
Accessibility and Nearby Attractions
The construction site surrounding the hotel is just a brief detour from the exhilarating adventures waiting in the Troodos Mountains. Visitors are encouraged to explore nearby hiking trails, indulge in local cuisine, or simply bask in the tranquil mountain environment while awaiting the completion of the hotel.
An Invitation to the Experience
As renovations progress, the Berengaria Hotel invites curious souls to witness its transformation. Tourists are encouraged to keep an eye out for updates and to share their dreams of what this historic monument can become with their friends and family.

Living in a dream at a place that existed in luxury for kings and knights in times bygone!
Cannot wait for someone to renovate it and operate it in all its glory and luxury! Turn it into an amazing health and relaxation hotel, affordable to all not just the elite aristocracy 🦋
The hotel will feature 30 rooms and suites, along with a modern spa facility. The renovation of the hotel located in Prodromos, at an elevation of 1400 meters in the Troodos mountains, is currently progressing well. This stone-constructed mountain hotel first opened its doors in 1931 and ceased operations in 1984. Once regarded as the most opulent hotel in Cyprus, it was named in tribute to Queen Berengaria, the spouse of Richard the Lionheart, who was wed in Limassol in 1191.
Views! I can’t wait until they finish renovations so we can be transported back to its glory days! You can’t get close due to construction as of posting, but check out
K. F. Jacques “shut it down” on yt to see what it was like a few years ago!
Right now booring lost place, complete empty. There is a restaurant near by that is fresh 😜
Since it’s been sold in 2020, all the windows and entrances have been locked or barred, with very few options of entry into the building, yet the area itself has not been closed, making it possible to still wander around the place. Entry to the second floor is completely barred. Motion detector and alarm fitted inside the hotel in the main entry area. The area around the hotel, sadly, has not been cleaned and due to the large number of tourists still visiting the place, the entire area is full of rubbish and broken glass. Otherwise would have been a great attraction.
