Anchorage Traditional Mezedopolio is a hidden gem just a side street away from the bustling city center of Heraklion. The location is perfect for those looking to escape the typical tourist spots. The taverna is run by a wonderful couple, who feel like a warm and welcoming grandma and grandpa.
The ambiance is authentically traditional, making you feel right at home. The menu features classic tavern dishes like moussaka, stuffed peppers, and feta, all lovingly prepared by the grandmother herself. Each day, the fresh dishes are explained in English, adding a personal touch to the dining experience.
The food was incredibly delicious and skillfully prepared, all at a very reasonable price. For dessert, we were treated to something sweet and raki, along with a delightful chat on the house. We enjoyed it so much that we returned multiple times during our stay. This taverna truly made us feel at home, and we can’t recommend it highly enough!
Taziki, lamb with pasta, meatballs, Greek Salad, wine… absolutely amazing…not just a restaurant, it’s the owners home…the food is the best I’ve had compared to Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos…
We did not feel as the customers here, but as guests. We ate home cooked food and enjoyed it completely. As the food, the service was lovely. Our hosts stated, it’s better to come for lunch, when more options are available, but we were very happy with our dinner choices. Tsikoudia was the best i had in Crete.
As the same owner suggests “this is not a restaurant, it’s my home”. I never ate in places where the concept of “homemade” was so well proposed. A family environment where you would to join the tables with the other clients and eat together, as in a family reunion.
The food was good, tasty and plentiful. Particular note for the rabbit, one of the most good I’ve ever eaten.
