Discovering the Best Places to Stay in Santorini: Your Ultimate Guide
When planning a trip to Santorini, the question of where to stay becomes paramount. With its mesmerizing views and unique geography, choosing the right location can significantly enhance your experience on this stunning Greek island. In this guide, we will navigate through the best towns and resorts in Santorini, including Fira, Oia, Imerovigli, and Firostefani, alongside some of the island’s charming villages. Let’s dive in and explore Santorini together!
Fira: The Heartbeat of Santorini
Kicking off our journey is Fira, the largest town on the island and a quintessential representation of Santorini’s beauty. Nestled on the edge of the caldera, it boasts unparalleled vistas of the volcano. Fira is a bustling area filled with a diverse range of hotels, eateries, and shopping options, making it the ideal spot for those seeking vibrancy and excitement. However, if tranquility is what you seek, you might find Fira a tad overwhelming as the crowds flock to its picturesque streets.
Fira’s Unique Offerings
Fira serves as a fantastic hub for travel around the island, thanks to its robust bus network. The proximity to various attractions ensures that you spend less time commuting and more time exploring. While many hotels boast stunning views of the caldera, numerous budget-friendly options are available for those not focused on the view. This makes Fira an excellent choice for diverse travelers seeking both luxury and affordability.
Oia: The Romantic Gem
Next up is Oia, celebrated as Santorini’s most upscale village. Renowned for its unmatched sunset views, Oia is home to an array of high-end boutiques and gourmet dining options. As the sun sets, the hustle and bustle diminish, making it a charming place for a romantic getaway.
Unique Architecture and Stunning Vistas
The layout of Oia adds to its allure, with pedestrian-only zones and picturesque marble walkways. Most hotels in Oia are designed to maximize views, though a choice must often be made between caldera views or sunset vistas. The intimate, quiet atmosphere makes Oia a preferred choice for couples and honeymooners.
Imerovigli: The Quiet Beauty
Just a stone’s throw away, Imerovigli offers a more serene ambiance. This quaint village, known for having the best sunset views on the island, has breathtaking cliffs that provide an unobstructed sight of the horizon. While Imerovigli has fewer dining options, the quality of its establishments is top-notch, making it a peaceful getaway from the bustling streets of Fira and Oia.
Luxurious Resorts and Breathtaking Views
Imerovigli is home to some of Santorini’s most exquisite resorts, many perched dramatically along the cliff’s edge. Visitors can relax at infinity pools that overlook the caldera and indulge in fine dining experiences against a backdrop of stunning sunsets. For those seeking tranquility and luxury, Imerovigli should be high on your list of places to stay in Santorini.
Firostefani: Close to the Action
A short walk from Fira lies Firostefani, an excellent option for visitors who appreciate proximity to the lively city but desire a quieter environment. With dramatic caldera views, Firostefani is home to several charming restaurants and boutique accommodations without the overwhelming crowds found in Fira.
A Blend of Relaxation and Accessibility
Firostefani is an idyllic blend of convenience and calm, making it perfect for those who want to experience Santorini’s vibrant scene without being directly in the midst of it. Ideal for families or travelers looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, it serves as a great base for your Santorini adventures.
Beyond The Caldera: Alternative Choices
When exploring Santorini, stepping beyond the caldera towns can offer unique experiences. Kamari and Perissa beaches present family-friendly environments with beautiful coastlines and restaurants. These destinations allow visitors to savor the sun and the sea while still being a short bus ride from the caldera.
Sun and Sea: Kamari and Perissa
Kamari’s pebble beach and the charming beachfront promenade create a lively atmosphere perfect for families. The open-air cinema in Kamari is not to be missed, offering film lovers a distinct experience under the stars. On the other hand, Perissa boasts a sandy beach and a relaxed vibe, appealing to those who prefer a quieter beachfront atmosphere without sacrificing comfort.
Enchanting Villages: Pyrgos and Akrotiri
For those yearning for traditional beauty, Pyrgos and Akrotiri offer delightful alternatives. Pyrgos, with its enchanting winding streets and mesmerizing views, provides an authentic island experience away from the tourist rush. Meanwhile, Akrotiri is not only home to remarkable archaeological sites but also boasts some of Santorini’s best beaches and calm, romantic sunsets.
Discovering Hidden Gems: Megalochori
Megalochori stands out for its charming alleys and local wine culture. With exquisite architecture and fewer tourists, it provides an authentic taste of Santorini life. Frequenting the local wineries and popping into boutique hotels make it an appealing option for those looking for a unique experience.

💕💕💕💑💑👄❤️💗
Superbly informative video. Many thanks!
Awesome video, very informative.
This was a great video and really helped with our accommodation choices. We are planning on spending seven nights split between Fira and Kamari in early October. Would you have advice on how many nights to spend at each and which way to do it? Beach first and then Caldera or other way around? Much appreciated
Hi! In which area of the island do you recommend staying in the winter (end of November)? Thanks!
Hi dave your fira video is incorrect views shown is oia not firi as in your video
Hey Dave, I’m looking for a last minute holiday to Greece in October, we want to see some archaeological sites and also visit some beaches and different islands, not sure on renting a car tho, a bit apprehensive. What location would you recommend for this 😊
Istoria Hotel located in the Perissa Beach area is a fantastic hotel, highly recommend…
Thx ❤️
Very informative. I am going to Greece next month, and trying to determine my choices of location. Will be staying there for three days.
HI there such a great informative video. Thank you. What would you say is the best beach to go to in Santorini ?
Super useful, thank you!
Very helpful thanks Dave, what are the restaurants prices like for 2 adult meals ?
Great video 👍
Dave these videos are awesome, straight to the point!
Hi! We are 6 adults (2 moms and 4 adult girls) traveling to Greece for the first time and love your videos for tips and advice on what to do! We want to spend 3 nights in a luxury hotel in Santorini as a treat and right now are booked in Katikies Chromata. It doesn't come up on your ratings as one of the best luxury ones to stay in – is it in an awkward location? What advance or knowledge do you have about that? Our must-list is it is in the caldera, has sunset views, and an infinity pool! Rewatching all your videos to absorb the information – we love how you give such constructive helpful advice! For 6 nights in Santorini, where would you pick the second destination to be after we do the first 3 nights in a luxury hotel?
Perivolas in Oia is 20k for 3 nights in May. Mate you need to give better budget friendly accomodations not celebrity accomodations.
Thank you!
Where would I stay in Fira that doesn’t have so many stairs?
I’m going this September and I’m unsure about where to stay for the best beaches : would you say Kamari is better or stay 3 nights in Kamari but also in another town ? (Thanks)
HI Dave, excellent presentation. Would you recommend booking perhaps 1 year in advance to save some money or it really doesn't matter? Second, I would like to avoid going when its windy. Based on your experience, which months have the strongest winds?
How do the people move the furniture if there are no ways for cars??
Hello, great informative videos. My wife and I are planning to visit Santorini next March. I checked availability on every place you suggested in Oia and Imerovigli via Expedia and they all said sold out?!? Are they maybe just not open during late March? Hard to believe they would already be sold out a year in advance. thanks.
Hi Dave, Do you know anything about this new hotel in Oia named "hom santorini". I have been trying to find out some information on it but can't seem to get anything.
