Discover Insane Greek Street Food Tour in Athens
Embark on a culinary adventure through Athens, Greece, and experience the most incredible Greek street food! In this delightful journey, we’ll indulge in mouthwatering specialties including luscious lamb dishes and gigantic gyros.
A Day in Athens
As the sun rises on my second day in Athens, I am absolutely famished and ready to dive into the flavors of traditional Greek street food. Are you ready? Let’s get started!
Breakfast Delight
Our first stop is for Bougatsa—a heavenly pastry filled with creamy custard and delicately dusted with powdered sugar and cinnamon. This delightful treat, warm from the oven, is the perfect way to ignite my day. As a dessert lover, I can’t think of a better breakfast to indulge in. The creaminess is subtle, not overly sweet, and it transports me back to my Italian roots.
Savoring Meze
With breakfast done, it’s time for some meze—small plates that showcase the essence of Greek street food. Our table is adorned with an array of tantalizing dishes:
- Fava beans with pickled onions and olives,
- Mussels served with a spicy garlic sauce, and
- Marinated anchovies topped with parsley and olive oil.
Each dish tempts the palate with its freshness and unique flavors. The anchovies are especially captivating, bursting with the taste of lemon and herbs.
A Traditional Taverna Lunch
Next, we venture to one of Athens’ oldest tavernas, Taverna Klimataria, which has been around since 1927. Here, we dive into an authentic Greek meal featuring:
- A vibrant Greek salad loaded with feta cheese, oregano, olive oil, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper.
- Tender lamb shank, slow-cooked until it falls off the bone and infused with the aromatic essence of rosemary and oregano.
This simple yet exquisite Mediterranean fare showcases the freshness of local ingredients while remaining true to traditional cooking methods.
Seafood Indulgence
After a hearty lunch, we cool off with a refreshing Greek iced coffee, a popular drink that draws people of all ages. Once recharged, it’s time for the main event: seafood! Sherly is thrilled to introduce me to her favorite dish—crispy calamari, paired beautifully with tagliolini pasta topped with succulent shrimp.
As we drizzle lemon over the calamari, the crunch and freshness tantalize our taste buds. The pasta, cooked to perfection, joins the party with bright flavors from fresh herbs and a hint of zest.
The Culinary Finale
To wrap up our gourmet exploration, we indulge in a traditional pork gyro. Served in a pita and layered with tzatziki, tomatoes, and onions, this dish is a must-try when visiting Athens. The flavors meld perfectly, showcasing the beauty of Greek street food.
Finally, we savor a delicious Greek wine as we reflect on our culinary journey. With each bite and sip, we soak up the vibrant flavors that Athens has to offer.
Conclusion
Our Greek street food experience in Athens has been nothing short of remarkable. From sweet pastries to savory gyros, every moment spent tasting the local cuisine captures the heart of Greece. So if you’re planning to visit Athens, immerse yourself in the city’s street food scene; it’s an adventure you won’t want to miss!
Thank you for joining us on this thrilling culinary escapade, where Greek street food reigns supreme. Until next time, happy eating!

Klimataria has a very nice old Athens atmosphere and very good traditional Greek food!! It’s not in the best part of downtown Athens, buts its definitely worth a visit. 👍
so Subway sandwhich is just a greek salad or antio pasto salad with a large crouton?
I believe the original Greek cooking (ie the mediterranean diet) was actually a lot lighter with much less meat. These foods you ate are really "Sunday foods", ie reserved for special occasions and not for every day (people couldn't afford all that meat and seafood very often anyway). In reality there was also a lot of cheap foods like legumes, pasta, veggies from the garden, and very simple dishes like tomato and cheese on some bread with a drizzle of olive oil and seasoning. Those lucky enough to live by the sea would also fish occasionally or harvest seafood from the rocks as well.
Well most of that wasn't really street food as such but yeah I agree all those foods are awesome! I think one of the reasons Greeks and Italians get along is because we appreciate eachother's foods 🙂
And no, Italian food is not pizza and pasta, it's many other things that Italians really good at: meat, fish, cheeses, pastries, deserts and many more. Ever had melon wrapped with prosciutto? It's a must!
Grande!! Troppo simpatico 💪💪👏🏻👏🏻
Now go check your cholesterol, ha ha ha!
My Greek grandparents in Greece never ate this much meat , not even close to it. They ate a lot of veg , salads feta cheese home baked sourdough bread eggs , varied bean soups
and maybe chicken once a week . They lived well into their late nineties

For your exceptional presentation of Greece and the Greek food, you should be eating for free. At least 😊 Very very nice video
03:24 Hey!!! You cheated! You didn't pronounce the restaurants name here.. 😉
ΟΙΝΟΖΥΘΕΣΤΙΑΤΟΡΙΟΝ
(It means "Wine-Beer-Restaurant")
With his obvious love of good food…how is this guy so thin? 🙂
shame!!! you pick ALL tourist traps. Who the heck has marinated fish, Mussels in garlic sauce (funny you could pick it up), any fava paste for 2nd breakfast- certainly NOT greeks. You can as well rename your show as “ product placement” show in Athens. Calamari in garlic sauce ? what the heck are you showing? Pack up and go back to where you came from. Certainly, NOT Italy because Italians have taste.
I will be in athens next week, do u have a list of restaurants to visit?
I got a kilo just from watching 😂😂 funny how youtube knows when I'm on a diet to show me such videos 🤣🤣
Μy friend, your reaction when you taste the chops is all the money
