25 Must-Try Greek Dishes: A Culinary Adventure in Greece
Greek cuisine is a gastronomic journey, one that often begins with the sweet aroma of pastries wafting through the vibrant streets of Athens. As I stand before the historical Hadrian’s Arch, I’m eager to explore both the traditional and contemporary delights that Greece has to offer. If you’re wondering where to start, let this guide introduce you to my 25 favorite Greek dishes you absolutely must try!
The Irresistible Greek Pastries
To dive into the world of Greek cuisine, we first need to talk pastries. Greek pastries are typically known for their flaky filo dough, and they come in a delightful array of choices. After spending a fortnight in this beautiful country, one glance at my figure tells me how indulgent these treats can be! The iconic spanakopita—a savory pastry stuffed with spinach and often feta cheese—is just the tip of the iceberg. Let me also introduce you to bougatsa, a lesser-known gem hailing from the northern region of Macedonia. This delectable pastry, filled with custard or meat, showcases the richness of Greece’s culinary diversity.
A Street Food Sensation: Kolouri
As I navigate the bustling streets, I can’t help but notice the tempting sesame-crusted circles of dough known as kolouri. These delightful snacks, sold by street vendors throughout major cities, are reminiscent of Turkey’s simit and are impossible to resist. If you find yourself wandering the streets of Athens, searching for a quick bite, you should definitely snag one of these warm, crispy treats.
Sip on Some Greek Coffee
No culinary exploration is complete without a coffee break! Greece has a unique coffee culture, and there are three must-try varieties for any caffeine enthusiast. The most famous is the frappe, a frothy iced coffee that originated in Thessaloniki in 1957. Next, we have cappuccino freddo, an iced cappuccino that’s equally delightful. For a bold flavor, opt for an iced espresso. All the cool kids order their coffee in Greek, so don’t forget to practice those phrases!
A Colorful Greek Salad Experience
Moving on to the heart of Greek dishes, let’s talk about the beloved Greek salad, or horiatiki. This refreshing dish typically includes juicy tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, and creamy feta cheese, all drizzled with olive oil. You might even come across unique variations, featuring ingredients like sea fennel in upscale establishments. A fresh Greek salad is a perfect complement to any meal, bringing color and health to your plate.
The Staples of Greek Street Food: Souvlaki and Gyros
You can’t explore Greek cuisine without indulging in the famous street food options: souvlaki and gyros. Both are essential to the local food culture but have their distinctions. Gyros consists of meat cooked on a vertical spit and wrapped in pita, while souvlaki comprises skewered grilled meat. At street vendors or traditional tavernas, these dishes are served with the beloved tzatziki—an aromatic yogurt dip, a must-try.
The Richness of Dolma and Gemista
Another delicious family of dishes to explore is dolma and gemista. While dolma refers to stuffed vine leaves, gemista encompasses all stuffed vegetables. These dishes are reminiscent of the rich Ottoman culinary tradition, making them a staple in Greece. Their delectable rice filling and robust flavors will surely steal a place in your heart.
Indulge in Saganaki
Fried cheese, known as saganaki, is another highlight of Greek cuisine. This dish is typically prepared in a small frying pan, resulting in a crispy exterior that gives way to melty, gooey cheese. Often enjoyed as an appetizer, saganaki is sure to please anyone with a penchant for cheese.
Comfort Food: Pastitsio and Moussaka
For those in search of hearty comfort food, pastitsio and moussaka will not disappoint. Pastitsio is a layered dish composed of pasta, ground meat, and creamy béchamel sauce, often compared to lasagna. Moussaka follows a similar structure but typically incorporates eggplant. Both dishes are further testaments to Greece’s rich culinary connections to Italy.
Savoring the Sea: Fresh Seafood in Greece
Greek cuisine wouldn’t be complete without seafood, reflecting the country’s extensive coastlines. Fresh fish can be found in markets, and many local restaurants will cook it just the way you like it. One standout option is octopus, renowned for its tender texture and flavor that captures the essence of the Aegean Sea.
Sweet Endings: Greek Desserts
Your culinary adventure wouldn’t be complete without exploring the realm of Greek desserts. Famous for its creamy texture, Greek yogurt is a beloved treat. But the pièce de résistance is undoubtedly baklava, a heavenly combination of filo pastry, nuts, and syrup. Making it can be time-consuming, but it is well worth the effort!
Cherishing the Free Dessert: Kerasma
Don’t miss out on the delightful tradition of kerasma, where a complimentary sweet treat is offered at the end of your meal. One of my favorites is the sticky orange cake, but the liqueur masticha, flavored with pine resin, is another unique experience you won’t want to overlook.
Raising a Glass: Traditional Greek Spirits
Lastly, let’s toast to Greek spirits! Tsipouro and ouzo are the quintessential drinks you’ll find in every taverna. Tsipouro, a potent spirit, is often served neat, while ouzo has an anise flavor and is more widely enjoyed with meze dishes. These local beverages reflect the convivial spirit of Greek dining.
Culinary Connections: The Heart of Greece
As you can see, Greek cuisine is a tapestry of flavors that intertwines history, tradition, and innovation. From savory pastries to fresh seafood and sweet delights, there is something for everyone in Greek food culture. So the next time you find yourself in Greece, make it a point to try as many of these 25 Greek dishes as you can. Your taste buds will be eternally grateful!

Omg youre wrong in things in the video.
First of all theres no Ottoman or italian anywhere in greek cuisine.
Everything the Ottomans know about cuisine its been taken from Byzantine the Arabs and Persia (todays Iran).
Dolmades which the proper name is Αμπελοφυλλα γεμιστά which has roots in Ancient Greece.
Skewers which are called kalamaki from the Ancient Greece where they would fish with the calami (bamboo) and use little sticks from them to grill fish n lamb and goats.
Pork gyros did not exist until 1980.
Everything its called souvlaki even the yeero.
Pastitsio has nothing to do with lasagna.
Greek meatsauce has cinnamon and all spice italians do not these in their bolognese.
Koulouri its not Ottoman it goes back in Ancient Greece.
Ottomans didnt even had seeds.
Youre stuck in Ottoman not realizing that greeks lived in what is modern Turkey 100s of years before ottomans stepped foot in the region.
Basic history….
Gyros; fries or no fries?
Let the battle begin!
I've seen a few sources on YouTube that claim gyros served as street food in Greece always have fries in them. However, I've eaten at a lot of Greek restaurants in America that are owned and run by authentic Greek immigrant families, and fries are never even metioned as an option.
So which is it?
Why would you create a video of Greek food and witter on about the Ottomans, the Arabs…even Iceland? Its crazy. If you went to Iceland would you talk about Greek food? Just stay on topic. Also, the accent placed on your pronunciation of Greek words is incorrect.
12,000 years The Greeks were living before the word " Romans " came around without any passages or texts — plagiarisms taken from the Greeks ; and now…your yapping snapping mouth word salad.
I'm sorry but when you talk about influences in Greece, before you mention Ottomans or Romans, you have to mention what influence the Byzantines and Alexander the Great had on the world before them.
I love you ❤
Lovely video. The foods are similar to all the other Mediterranean foods, with slight variations. But you forgot kunafa! 😮
Greek food isn't good really. From Poland with love ❤️ but food yak.not all but most
Really good 👍
half of these covered are Turkish originated which later got part in Greek cuisine in the Greek mainland after the turkish – greek population exchange. I respect Greeks that they try to protect their culture but putting the word "greek" in all those foods or drinks does not make them greek such as; greek baklava or greek coffee or dolmades.
Better not tell a Greek that their food was influenced by Italian food, they believe they invented it first. You also pronounced some of the foods incorrectly. I probably would have been smacked by my Greek mother in law if I pronounced things wrong.
I love Greek food
Just recently traveled to Athens and Kreta Island. Oh mannn! I am amazed by the beauty of that country. Greek food is a mixture of the Middle East, very flavorful and creamy. There’s a pastry stores in every corner streets and coffee shops. To greek, that’s breakfast for them. And I’m very surprised that a lot of Greek smoke, even as young as 14 years old 😳.
U are more greeķ than the greeks!!
When ottomans conquered Kontantinople (Istanbul as it is known today, or the Byzantine empire) all the sultans wanted to eat like the Greeks. The Greeks that had already been experimenting with ingredients and recipes coming from west to east and vice versa. The same happened BEFORE that when the Roman empire conquered the Greeks. The Elite of the Romans showed their status by how much of a Greek lifestyle they had. They had to have Greek teachers for their kids, had to have the best Greek cuisine and be the closest to a Greek lifestyle as possible. Let's not forget that even BEFORE that the empire of Alexander the Great used to transferred ingredients from west to east and vice versa. Theophrastus (Θεόφραστος 371–287 BC) in his book: "The history of plants", was one of the many Greek scientists and philosophers that first described all these products. Their ORIGIN, their taste, their use and their properties. Greeks always shared knowledge. Turks always ravaged, renamed and presented everything as their own and the beloved Italians are very good at showing off. So, who influenced whom? Just because we are not showing off, it does not mean that we have not gone deeper to what the soul wants. Answers. Not only for the taste, but also for science, physics, philosophy, medicine, gymnastics, wellbeing…etc. Some concepts might have been scattered around from some older civilizations but in Greece, there were breakthroughs. Because the minds here were and will always be restless. Please make your own research. (For Greek viewers, please feel free to copy and paste).
As a Proud Greek here, I have to say I love that girls attitude pronation, and I can also feel her love towards Our amazing country ❤️❤️ And by the way I also like everything she showed apart from Tsipouro.. She is pretty near to my taste 👍👍Gorgeous video. Congratulations 😘
